OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE PURCHASE

MOONED
I have a chance to pick up a few long guns and want to get a feel for the potential collector value. All are in a solid 90 - 95 % condition. Also, ammo will be thrown in with the purchase. A couple of boxes for each caliber.

Winchester model 100 in .243 ($400.00)
Winchester model 100 in .284 ($400.00)
Remington model 141 in .30 remington caliber ($250.00)
Stevens model 240 (I think) .410/22 with the plastic stock ($250.00)


I just need an opinion on whether to make the purchase of all or some of these items. I think the Remington is a "no-brainer", and possibly the Stevens. I realize the .284 Winchester is an odd caliber which may inhance the value. But still would appreciate your "take" on this transaction.

    The first two, do not pass go...get them!

    The third is a pretty good rifle. Not a very hot caliber, but still a decent deer cartridge for woods shooting. If you have the case I would go for it. The price tag is pretty reasonable on that.

    The fourth you find all over the place. Double chambered rifle/shotgun combos are kind of coming back but there isn't much collector value in them. This is a good gun to send a kid into an area he won't get in trouble in and let him shoot small game and small birds. Or you could do that. But, the $250 is near new price. I personally wouldn't want it unless it had some sentimental value like your grand-dad or uncle had it.

    Edit: {pertaining to the last paragraph} If you felt obligated to take it as part of the whole collection, so the person offering the collection wouldn't be burdened with it, I would do that too. You won't lose but you won't gain. And, you may be stuck with it a while.

    Ref: the two Model 100s- there was a recall- firing pin problem, could go full auto. If you get them, remove mag, pull bolt to rear, look thru the mag well at the "roof" of the receiver. There was a letter stamped there when the recall was performed. If not done, can be done for free- contact Winchester. .284 cal is fairly collectable. The Mdl 100 DOES require cleaning of the gas system after shooting.

    Sounds like the two Wincehster model 100's are the ones to get. I would have thought the .243 would not be that "desired". I also would have thought the Remington would have been a more sought after item.

    I had a new Model 100 Carbine in .284 in about 1966 or so. It was a very reliable rifle, and it accounted for many deer. The .284 cartridge was designed to give .270 Winchester ballistics in a shorter action, and was offered in the semiautomatic Model 100 and the leveraction Model 88.

    The .284s are a bit rare, so the collector value is better.

    There is a Winchester 800 number you can call. They ask your gun ID, then they tell you if the firing pin was fixed.

    Thanks for all the input. The descriptions I had previosly given regarding these firearms were "over the phone descriptions". After meeting the gentleman & looking the items over, I did pick up the Winchester in .284 and the Remington model 141. Both were in very good condition but the .243 was not near as nice. The wood had a variety of dings throughout but the bluing was still quite nice. The owner has another potential buyer, so I held off the purchase of this one.

    Also included in the purchase was 4-1/2 half boxes of .284 ammo for an additional $30.00. That in itself was not bad either.
