long range shooting
If you were starting out long range (500 yards)shooting what would you use?
Gun? Caliber? Scope?

I was at the range this weekend and took my first long range shots. I was using a Rock River .223 with a 20" barrel and a bi-pod. I sighted in my new scope at 100 yds and then shot the rifle at 200 yds hitting all in the black on the target.
I then went to the 550 yd range and was able to put 8 out of 15 on the target with one in the black. Since this was my first attempt at shooting anything over 100 yds I was pleased with the results. Problem is my thoughts since Friday have only been with ways to improve my long range shooting. Not only at the 550 yd range but I want to shoot at the 1000 yd range.
So after that background my question...
What would be appropriate calibers and rifles for target shooting at 1000 yards.
Also any pointers are appreciated0 -

What gun do you have now and what type of shooting do you plan of doing. 400 yards with most factory 300 win mag shouldnt be a problem unless the barrel has a defect. 0 -

That's if you want to stay with the .300 WM.
Youll get better ballistics if you switch to the 7mm Rem Mag in a 1-9" twist.

Depending on which bullet you use and at what altitude.[;)] {edit:}...Some go farther than that! I have one and like it a lot (7 WSM). However, the standard Winchester actions for WSM's allow for bullets to be seated way out. I seat my Berger and JLK 180's .015" into the lands and they still fit the magazine. His rifle should be able to accomodate long seated bullets in the 7mm Rem mag. Which, BTW, gives just a little more oomph than the 7mm WSM.
Also, I looked back at your post and thought if you are set on sticking to 190 gr. bullets 1-12" will stabilize them. It may or may not stabilize 200-210's. One brand yes, another, maybe, maybe not. If you are looking to duplicate the new military contract for the .300 WM (7.62x67mm NATO) then you will now need 220 gr. Sierra HPBT's. Federal just got that contract for 39.9 Mil. The M-24's previously chambered in .308 are slowly coming in for refurb to the new caliber.0 -

what i have now is a remington 700adl in 300 win mag looking to rebarrel it and new stock. the stock i am going with a mcmillen not to sure on barrel yet looking to shoot from 200yds out to 500+ yards. the best group so far at 200yds is just under 3inches!using Federal gold metal match and my own hand loads.0 -

Agreed, that is high-BC .223 range.
Wear out the factory barrel and you will have a better idea of what you need to shoot at the ranges you actually have.0 -
If I were you I'd go with 26-28" 1:8 twist and hand load >220 grainers and really take advantage of those higher BC pills, i.e. 240 SMKs.
That's exactly what I'm going to do when one of my .300WM's barrel goes out and going for a McGowen 28" barrel.

Basically it sounds like you are going to be using your 700 ADL as a donor? Please correct me if I am wrong.
That being the case, and my first suggestion would be to follow Sandwarrior's advice, and rebarrel it in 7mm Remington magnum. I would put a 28 inch Krieger, or Shilin barrel on it with a 1 in 9 twist rate to handle the longer heavier bullets with very low drag(VLD), or ultra low drag(ULD) characteristics, that have very high ballistic coefficients.
My second suggestion would be to rebarrel in 300 Win Mag with either of the two above listed makers with a 1 in 10 twist.
With both rebarreling suggestions, pay close attention to your AOL cartridge length and specify your throat of your chamber accordingly to match.
