winchester 94 prices
I just bought a 94 with dom 1960. it's a 95-99% gun, nra excellent,
paid $650 shipped.
i was looking on the auction side and noticed the "pre 64" 94's go for about $200 more than post 64, regardless of condition.
i already have a pre 64 30-30, but i've never held or shot a post 64.
my question is, does the price difference reflect the better quality of manufacture, or is it simply hype and "what the market will bear"?

INHO it is not HYPE the model 94 was one of the worst examples of what BEAN COUNTERS can do to a classic Company. they changed more things and took more shortcuts on the model 94 then many other firearms in their product line. 0 -

Cruise one of you local gunshows or gunshops... find and pick up a post-1963 Model 94 (serial number 2,700,000+), and you will quickly answer your own question.

In 1964 Winchester stopped using forged steel for many parts and went to stamped sheet metal. Obviously, this was to save money and remain competitive. 0 -
I have both pre-64 and post-64 94's because some calibers that are fun were not chambered in pre-64 rifles or carbines. In my opinion pre-64's are indeed more better. To my eye quality on post-64s can be variable, among the best being 9422s.
That said, the higher price can be justified simply by greater demand for the pre-64s. Even the perception of higher quality whether real or not wll push the price upward. When it was announced that USRAC would cease production of "Winchester" firearms in 2006, dealers immediately raised their prices and people paid them, thinking all "Winchesters" no matter which company actually built them had just become collectable, or at least more desireable than they were the week before.
Both aspects figure into the higher prices for pre-64s, but at least the quality justifies the prices on those. In the long term I believe the inflated prices on the USRAC produced rifles will not endure.0 -
appreciate the info! I'll have to find someone who has one of the "new" 94's and check it out (nearest gun store is an hour and a half, and he doesn't have one.[:(]
the 94 was my first long gun and i was fascinated with it as long as i can remember.
i wonder what they would have to charge nowdays for a gun built to pre 64 standards?[:p]

Hi....I own quite a few of the "newer" 94s. They are just as much fun to shoot; will "git it done" in forest or field; many can handle a top-mounted scope; and not all come with that confounded cross-bolt safety. The choice of calibers is enough for anyone, and barrel lengths, too ! Stock styles for every budget, and taste. And you don't have to worry about "ruining a valuable collector's item" when you use it ! Try one...You'll like it ! BT 0
