winchester rifle

I am looking at a rifle that is part of a limited series offered by Davidson's. It is rolled mark to be a 45-90 black powder . Is this truly black powder only or could one use smokeless powder. The barrel seems as heavy as one they have that was stamped as a 45-70.

    I just purchased a Winchester Model 70 XTR 30-06. I paid about $600 for it with a scope and hard case. The gun is in great condition. Did I do alright? What does the XTR stand for?
    Any help will be appreciated.

    I have no clue about the rifle to which your refer, but if it is a modern reproduction, it is undoubtedly safe with moderate smokeless loads.

    Do you mean the USRA-Winchester 1885 Creedmoor Ltd in .45-90?

    If so, it is a Highwall knockoff and is a strong action with a good sound American made Badger barrel.
    The reason it is marked "black powder" is because .45-90 is not currently manufactured by any of the major ammunition companies and there is no SAAMI specification for it.

    Loaded ammunition is rather scarce and expensive.
    Reloading data for smokeless is kind of limited.
    Edit to add: Lyman 48th has some, presumably carried over to 49th.

    What are you wanting the rifle FOR?

    Winchester authorized or licensed Miroku in Japan(Brownings major manufacturer), to make some limited runs of 1892's, 1886's, 1895's, and 1885's(both high and low walls). Though they are beautifully made guns, they are not the Winchester of old. However, on the plus side of things, they can handle smokeless powder. Hodgdon's reloading site

    Huh, I didn't know they made the 1886 repro in .45-90, although a lot of them have been rechambered for it.

    Sure enough, a "reissued" 1886 is or has been available in .45-90.

    I do recall the PMC factory loads. The only sources I could find today were Buffalo Arms and Ultramax, but I wasn't looking very hard, being a handloader.

    If you go to Davidson's website, they have various 1885's and 1886's in both 45-70, and 45-90. Before PMC went defunct, they were making ammo for the both chamberings too.
