I have never had any problems with USGI mags with green followers.

By reputation HKs are the "best"

Brownell's AR-15/M16 mags were made with exactly that purpose in mind:

While there is nothing wrong with the USGI mags MagPul P-Mags are where it is at, http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/cid=0/mfg=03Y/Products/MAGPUL

I highly suggest any MagPul products for your needs.

Thanks for the input. I will take a close look at both of these. Anyone have a recommendation for a 40 round mag?

I love h&k's. I got rid of most of my pmags and gi's and buy the H&K's by the dozen when I find them.

Mag-Pul P mags are the way to go.

They do not reliably function in my fs200. Anything that doesn't function 100% in all my firearms that take the same type of magazine is not worth owning imho. H&K's do the job, and do it better than any of the other ones I own/ed [^]

I'd bet my life on MagPul P-Mags. They only come in 20- and 30-round varieties (they even make 10-round ones for "assault weapon ban" states), but they've worked without fail for me every time I've used them.

I'm shooting from the hip, here, because I can't answer the OP's question. I used aluminum 20rd mags in Vietnam. However..

Best mag is one that can take the abuse of sand/flopping prone during incoming, and still function. Since the OP's son is going into harms way, I sincerely hope everyone is considering magazines that have been known to function in combat after having been severely knocked about, both in and out of the rifle. Thanks, Joe

Ikeda: have your son 'ask around' his unit, and see just what the troops in the field consider best after exposure to [paragraph above]. You can always send them to him (with the plastic protective covers attached) after he arrives in-country.

I bet you wouldn't if you were using them in a fs2000. I can make a video when I have some time with 10 different p-mags in mine and duplicate the ftf's in every magazine, everytime.

Would you like to make a wager on it?

I like Lancer L5 mags. they are translucent, so you can visually check your ammo.. I have alot of Cmag stainless steel 30 round mags with magpul anti tilt followers as well, I have had 0 mag related malfunctions with them, Cmag also makes 40 round mags.

Brownels brand mags with green or mag pul followers are good also..

Also a big improvement for the AR-15 is the boonie packer redi mag..

It attaches to the left side of the reciever and holds an extra mag, unlike mag sinches you dont have to use special pouches to have a second mag ready at hand. it is easy as pie to use.

To improve performance get an d-fender ring, to stop play between the upper and lower get a ZM weapones accu wedge.
