ruger 556 vs standard ar-15

any advice on which is a better deal? a $1500 ar or a $1500 sr556? thanks

    My advice: Do a lot more research before you buy anything.

    You need to figure out what you want, & what manufacturers offer the configuration that you need. Start by buying an introductory book, such as The AR-15 Complete Owner's Guide by Walt Kuleck. Do a "search" on the word "AR" on this forum, & read all our discussions on the topic for the last couple of years. Read the American Rifleman that comes with your NRA membership, & subscribe to a good magazine like Guns & Ammo, & read all their new product reviews. Check out the websites at Fulton Armory & Rock River Arms, as well as other manufacturers.

    If you still have questions after you do all that, come back, we'll still be here.

    Why a $1500 AR?
    There is not much you can't build for $1000.

    Personally, I would go with an AR-15 that is well appointed to the way you want it, then get a gas piston upper as an add on later...when they are more perfected and the price winds down.

    You can get a lot of AR for $1500. If you want a piston gun get the Ruger, it's the most piston gun for the money.
    As said you can get a very good AR for a grand or less if you shop around.

    +1 I would spend the extra for the piston myself just to avoid cleaning every outing.

    You can get a pretty decent AR for a $1000 for another $250 right here on GB you can buy a piston conversion kit for $250 saving your self $250 compared to the Ruger. You can use the money saved to buy more goodies for the AR. Even with a piston gun you still got to clean it. Not as many things to clean on it as a conventional AR but in the end it still must be cleaned.

    Be honest with you here. I have the M14 piston system, and the AR impingement system. I find equal labor expended to to a proper cleaning on both. Do a mental teardown/cleaning of both, and see for yourselves.

    If truth be known, I find the AR a little easier to do a thorough cleaning than the M14's gas piston/operating rod system. But hey, that's just me! Run with it, or blow it off..same same to me! Best, Joe
