6 X 47

I'm adding another (rifle) barrel to my expanding T/C collection and I am interested in the 6 X 47 for my Contender. What I want is a caliber that puts about a 70 grain bullet around 3,000 fps, easy to shoot, useful out to about 250 yds and the 6 X 47 seems to fill the bill. I reload & am interested in experiences others have with the caliber. Is brass best made from 222 Magnum or 223?

    The small case 6x47 is a mild cartridge with better than average performance for most bullet weights depending on twist rate of course.

    The 6x47 that you're asking about is built on the .222 Rem. Magnum case. The 6x45 is built on the .223 Rem.

    You can achieve your goal of 3,000 FPS with 70 gr. bullets even with barrels as short as 20". But the pistol length barrels don't quite make it unfortunately.

    I've used the 70 gr. Nosler BT and the 75 gr. Hornady VMAX in the shorter barreled rifles. The Mini-Mauser used to be a perfect candidate for this cartridge although realistically, any short action will work with the proper bolt face.

    That's good to know. I was thinking of the 6x47 based off the Swiss 6.5x47 which takes a .473 case head. It's a little too big for the contender but would work in the Encore. With a short barrel it could get you to 3000 w/a 70 gr. bullet, but I don't know how much powder would be going out the end of the barrel with it[:0]...it's always good though really[:D]

    I've been toying with chambering a 6 or 6.5 TCU in a Rem 799 action. It'd be a great little walking varmint rifle. I'm also thinking about sticking a 7mm Rem BR into either a short Mauser action (read inexpensive, cheap, lo-dinaro) or if I can find an old 700/722 action I would that. Anyhow, the 6mm TCU can get 3000 in a 14" barrel out of a Contender, if you find the right load. I do think, that's pushing it pretty hard. Settling for high 2800's or 2900 something isn't going to hurt the situation at all I think.

    Any of the above mentioned rifles could also double as a reasonable range deer rifle.

    Thanks for the info, this will be used out of a rifle so 3,000 fps should be no problem although I'll settle where the better accuracy leads me. I suppose I'm officially in oddball territory when I'm resizing 222 Magnum ammo to something less well known.

    I like shooting the larger calibers in handgun mode with the T/Cs but find each platform (Encore and Contender) suits me best in rifle form when I hover about the 24 to 28 caliber range.

    In looking for brass, dies I notice there are dies listed as 6X47 Lapua and dies listed as 6/222 Remington Magnum - and the 6/222 cost quite alot more than the 6X47. Can I use the 6X47 to size my 222 Rem Mag brass once I've taken the neck from .224 to .244?
