38 S&W Top Break 3rd Model
I was wondering what ammo can be used with the older top breaks from the 1880-90s. Is more modern smokeless ammo safe?

It would be best if you took the revolver to a gunsmith for inspection and test firing prior to use. As it's at least 110 years old and designed for black powder low pressure ammo, this would be a prudent thing to do. If the gunsmith OK's it you could try some of the modern .38 S & W ammo in small quantities. 0
