    The inserts, you'll see six of them at the lower left of the box, take the shape of a .22 Jet cartridge and allow .22LR cartridges to be inserted into them and then loaded into the cylinder in the normal manner. An extra .22LR cylinder was once available for the Model 53, which meant that no inserts were needed, but these special cylinders are no longer available.

    Toad..... Back when Smith still made the model 53 revolvers you could order your gun with a .22lr cylinder, as an option, that was fitted at the factory. It would also come with the inserts you asked about. As Mark said, they make it possible to shoot long rifle ammo in the Jet cylinder.

    I bought this model 53 with both the extra cylinder in .22lr and the Jet cylinder. As you can see it also has the inserts. A unique feature of this gun is the selectable firing pin for rimfire or centerfire. There is a little tab on top of the hammer that you flip to make the selection.

    So how does the jet compare to the LR ?? Thanks for all of the great info.

    The Jet was basically a .357 case necked down to .22 cal. with a long sloping shoulder. No comparison to .22 LR. Lot more soup; big ball of fire, etc.
