Garand? bayonet

Since we are on the roll.....can anyone help me with a baoynet that came with my Garand? It has a 10" blade marked "S.A. 1911" w/flaming bomb on one side and "US" "460" and "483102" on the other side of the blade. It has the hard green sheath, with a metal tip, and the Ordnance "flaming bomb" at the top.

I am not concerned with the value, just any information as to who may have made it and when?

    That would be a WWI bayonet manufactured at the Springfield Arsenal for the Model 1903, which also fit onto the M1 Garand.

    Would this have been a "cut-down" version of a longer model? If so, does it have an official nomenclature model# or designation?

    Yes, it would be the US Model 1905, which originally had a blade length of nearly 16". The blades were shortened for M-1 Garand use in WWII and they were redesignated the Model 1905/42.

    This would originally have had wooden grips, these were normally changed to black bakelite when the blade was cut down if done so at an arsenal. If done in the field by a company armorer, it might still have wooden grips and the length may not be exact. The shorter blade length made them more utility as a long knife and much, much easier when sitting or riding in a jeep, etc..

    Cut down is easy to identify since the fuller (or Blood Groove) will go all the way to the end of the blade while the manufactured short bayonet would have the fuller starting after the point and going to the ricasso where the SA Bomb logo would be.
