savage arms model 342 .22 hornet

no serial number that I'm sure of but there's a circled 68 beside the savage arms stamp. Nothing has been filed off! Any clues?

    I don't know about Canada? But Rifles and Shotguns weren't required to have serial numbers in the U.S., prior to 1968.

    this one was bought in Vermont early '50s. Were these mass produced or are they difficult to find?

    not exactly common in .22h, there are a lot of them in .30/30 (340,342,880, ect.)

    I have 1 and seen a few on the auction side.They were made from 50 to 55 they are not rare.I have to check I'm not sure if mine has a serial * or not.

    Regardless of value, this is a very nice weapon for just about anything out to 200-250 yards. Dropped a coyote at 200 yards or so a few years back [8D]

    Welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.

    As you say, with a good sighting system(does it have a scope mounted on it?), it is good for 200-250 yards in the right hands. This is what the blue book says.

    They were only made in 22 Hornet. Their larger brothern, the model 340 was made in 222, and 30-30.

    yes, it has a 4x leopold scope. Just for fun today I sighted it in ( I had removed the sight to get the model number) At 100 yards it'll kill a crab apple no problem[:p]...loll. Fun rifle to shoot!

    As a 22 Hornet fan I would tell you that if you reload you need to slug and measure the barrel. The early Hornet used a .223 diameter bullet. Currently, today's guns are using a .224 diameter. I can tell you from experience that using a .224 bullet in a .223 barrel can cause it to come apart prematurely. In some cases it never reaches the target. If you want to improve the performance, have it rechambered to 22K Hornet. Making the brass is as simple as shooting it in the gun.
