Mdl.1917 rifle ???

I have mdl.1917 rifle,it has on both sides of the stock is
stamp D A V,any idea what that could stand for.It is a Winchester
1917 in real good shape.Thanks.

This mdl.1917 is in too good of shape to have been used as
a drill rifle.It is at least 95%.

  Among military veterans the DAV is almost universally understood to mean Disabled American Veterans. They have organizations in many locations and probably some have rifles for color guard and military funeral use.

  But.....you should be aware that most rifles used by veterans organizations were loaned to them by the federal government. Due to loss of paperwork (& members), some of these organizations mistakenly believe that the rifles belong to them. Eventually, the feds will ask for their return; if they don't get them, the rifles will be reported to the Treasury Dept as stolen.
  
  Hopefully, yours is one of the rifles that was purchased by the DAV organization.
