Help indentify old shotgun

a friend brought this to me looking for any info he ccould find on it. this shotgun/rifle has been passed down through his family for 3 to 4 generations. a 12 ga shotshell slides right into the barrel. is this a converted rifle of some type? or was it made to be a shotgun? any help is apprec

It's a converted French Army muzzle loading rifle. They were converted to breech loaders in the 1860's. This was prior to the Franco Prussian War of 1870. When the French lost this war, all these converted muzzle loaders were useless to them and everybody else. During the 1870's-1880's time frame they were converted in Belgium to short barrel smooth bore shotguns. Many found their way to the U.S., where they were sold by Sears and many other dealers as utility grade shotguns. Their going price in the old mail order catalogs, was between $3.00 & $5.00. They are known to U.S. collectors as "Zulu" guns, GOOGLE "Zulu Guns" and a lot of information will come up. 0 -
