S & W grip sizes
anyone know if the K & N frames and the smith 656 frame are different? Looking to grips to fit

There is no such model 656 from S&W. Are you asking about a 686-.357mag [?] If so it is a "L" frame and some "K" frame grips will fit. 0 -
"N" frame grips will only fit "N" frame guns. The "L" frame and "K" frame guns use the same size grips. You will also need to know if the gun is a square or round butt. It makes a difference when selecting grips. 0 -

Do you mean the Smith 65-6? That would be a K-frame.
If instead you mean the Smith 686, that model is an L-frame, though the L-frame uses the same grips as the K frame.
The N frame is the "large" frame, and it uses a different size/pattern grip.
As mentioned, you need to know if the gun is a square butt or a round butt, since the grips are different between the two. See here:
