Ideas for Self Defense Boot Knife
Need some ideas on a well made self defense boot knife and I am looking for a blackened steel boot knife with a blade between 4 and 5 inches or so for concealed carry, which should have a full tang through a solid handle and be fairly thick overall. The blade can be either single or double edge, and pointed to some degree so long as it can be utilized for social work if that unfortunate situation were to arise and it should also have a quality heavy duty leather clip-on sheath.
Thank you.
Thank you.

While there are any number of good makes that will meet your criteria, the knife design you describe (dual edge, blade greater than 4 inches) is illegal for carry (concealed or open) in most jurisdictions.
Edit:
I'm not saying carrying a knife (for a variety of purposes) doesn't have merit. At ARM'S LENGTH distance and with a skilled user, a knife can be every bit as deadly as a gun if not MORE so since it can create larger more dangerous wounds and doesn't jam or run out of ammo.
Still, apart from the legal problems described above, a knife is simply not a weapon generally accepted in our society for defensive use. That's an issue worth considering too. If you have the space for a fixed blade boot-knife, you likely have the room for a second gun.
Also, the "don't bring a knife to a gunfight" rule is good advice, IMO.
Obviously, if someone is attacking with the element of surprise against a victim with a holstered weapon (gun OR knife), the attacker is going to have a HUGE advantage, regardless of what weapon they use (gun, knife, beer bottle, 2x4, rock, fist, etc).
But make this a "fair" fight between skilled individuals with already drawn weapons, and the knife guy is going to end up shot.
There is a reason why Samuel Colt was the man that "made men equal".0 -
The best idea for a self-defense boot knife is a pistol in your pocket. Carrying a large knife is generally illegal. Most states allow pistols with a carry permit. If you can't legally carry a pistol, you likely can't legally carry a large knife. The penalty for doing so is usually the same, so if you are going to carry something illegally-why not a gun? 0 -
Actually I am good with the laws and with a CWL I can carry concealed weapons including but not limited to pistols, knives, etc and carry a concealed pistol and the knife is just a backup which is quite deadly up close for those that know how to use one.
Anyway, so just looking for some good recommendations for a well made self defense boot knife...
Edit:
A knife is what it is and the methods used to utilize it is part of wielding it as the knife is obviously at a disadvantage when encountering the gun and so must be used deceptively with the element of surprise, agility and with surgical precision to the most vulnerable parts of the human anatomy that will cause the gravest consequences.
I carry a primary pistol when possible (which is really for getting to a rifle or shotgun if at all possible) and always a backup which sometimes becomes the primary and the knife is just an extra backup to help drive the nails into the enemies coffin if the chance affords itself so it really depends on the situation, actually a knife is also good at making sandwiches too.0 -
I have owned several boot knives through the years, and the best one I owned was a double edge made by Gerber. In Florida we can carry double edged, auto opening, etc, with a concealed carry permit. 0 -
I'd opt for a #5 BlackJack/Ek in the cordura sheath; why not be all you can be? 0 -
Back when I used to read the slick gun magazines, I saw an article by the president of Cold Steel, Lynn Thompson. In the article, this idiot extolled the virtues of carrying a large knife instead of a gun, that the knife was legal when the gun was not, and that the gun was a superior close range weapon. He actually claimed he could get his big Bowie knife out and chop an attacker's arm off at the elbow before the attacker could shoot.
Self-serving ads disguised as articles are why I don't read slick gun magazines anymore.0 -

Hmm, haven't read anything like that and just read the normal stuff like Shotgun News and Guns and Ammo etc, do you have a link to the article perhaps as it would be an interesting read...
Do you have a martial arts background or have you ever lived in Japan as I have witnessed some amazing blade work not to mention weapon disarming that would sound ridiculous to most until it was seen...
Do you have a boot knife recommendation by the way?0 -
The article was in either Guns & Ammo or Shooting Times, and it was a good many years ago. I don't know how one would go about finding it.
I have very little training in martial arts, and zero in knife fighting. I don't carry a "boot knife," and can't recommend one. I do carry a quality locking blade folder clipped to my pocket. I use it for general utility work, but it is there in case I need it as a last ditch defensive weapon. It would be last ditch for sure. I am not dumb enough to bring a knife to a gunfight, so the knife would be used only if the guns were silenced.0 -
The best rule of knife fighting is..."never take a knife to a gun fight". I would simply carry a gun.
Best
Benchmade makes some topshelf automatic lockbacks also, you might wish to look at.
Best

Very well, I have always carried a quality lock blade knife and it is more or less a utility knife and wanted a fixed blade to eliminate the step of having to open the blade, although it would be a last ditch weapon to backup a pistol they shouldn't be underestimated hence the term cloak and dagger as many have been caught off guard believing that since they had a firearm on them that they were impervious to anything including a bladed weapon and upon doing so found themselves wounded or dead, many a police officer or soldier has made this mistake.
I don't know why someone would only arm themselves with just a bladed weapon unless that is all that they could attain at the time and could use it surreptitiously for example against a police officer or soldier being that they are known to carry weapons and so as to acquire their weapons since firearms are obviously the superior weapon at present. However as stated before, to underestimate the value of a good bladed weapon as a backup weapon could prove to be dangerous and or deadly.0 -
I have several SOG knives, Here is a dagger..

I dont think They even still make the models I have, but they are very good.
Here is another good knife made by gerber, it is a more utilitarian design, whereas the Sog is a fighting knife. I like mine.

As stated earlier the knife is just a backup not a primary as the firearm would obviously be a first choice, however if the incident went h2h and the firearm wasn't an option the knife could end the fight quickly in the right hands.

Yes I am aware of that, although I have gotten more than I needed from this thread actually and a few good suggestions as well.

Will check that out, thanks.0 -
well, sorry to be the johnny come lately here, but gerber makes a nice double edged boot knife with a good sheath.
I talked to spider, and ka-bar is considering offering one, but i haven't checked recently.
I prefer to carry an auto or assisted open folder in my top pocket. always worried about getting a weapon out from a boot or ankle holster. I don't carry guns down there for the same reason.
just my 2c
