new pistol suggestions
Hey guys... Looking to buy a pistol, sub compact, around $600 or less. I had a xd9 sub w/ nights that I loved but had to sell last year when $ was tight. My only pistol now is a xd45 and I would like to expand my "selection" and have a more interesting collection than just xd's. Suggestions? Should I stick with the xd?

I got a S&W M&Pc that I have been really happy with. Been carrying it for about 6 mo now.
I dont like compacts but this one fits me perfect.0 -
take a look at the new sig p238. (colt mustang clone). i'm very happy with the fit and finish and it's been 100% reliable with all ammo (it's .380 btw). if youre looking for a carry piece, this is a good one. for $600 you can get the "top of the line" with night sights etc.
another great gun, at a BARGAIN price, is the new Para GI Expert for around $500. it's not a compact, but every collection needs a 1911, and you can't eat this one for value.

EDIT: beantown makes some valid points. gotta be a bigtime 1911 fan to carry the little examples of the gun. i like 1911 style guns and have carried a colt defender, officers model, mustang and EMP9. and of course the most recent P238. but 1911's arent for everyone.0 -

In terms of subcompact guns, there are many out there to choose from: Glock, Smith M&P, Smith/Walther P99, XD, Beretta Storm, Taurus, a variety of reduced size 1911s, etc.
Most of the modern "chopped" service guns are good; which one is "best" is just a question of personal preference. EG, grip shape/angle, controls, caliber, etc.
Do you want an "interesting" gun collection, or do you want a gun collection that you can actually shoot well? IMO, guns that you can shoot well are usually more "interesting" than guns with cool appearances or fancy designs.
Are you going to carry this subcompact gun?
Assuming you are, (or might), there is something to be said about having proficiency with one gun or type of gun.
When the chips fall, and your life is on the line and the adrenaline is pumping and you've got three seconds to make life-or-death choices, you don't want to have to remember what sort of trigger you have, where the safety is (or isn't), where the mag eject button is, etc. If you do have more than one gun, it doesn't hurt if they can share ammo, magazines, and/or other parts too, and if stripping and maintenance are similar (less to learn, less to remember).
I say if you like the big XD and you liked the compact XD, and you shot the small one well, you really could do a lot worse. If you didn't like it, or there is some other gun that you believe you'll like better, then that's a different thing, but if it ain't broke, why fix it?
On the SIG 238/Colt Mustang clone, I wouldn't really classify it as a "subcompact" (as there is no larger version), but rather as a "pocket" gun. Semantics aside, personally, I'm not keen on the idea of a single-action pocket gun, though that's my subjective opinion. If you like 1911s in general, the design makes sense.
Apart from this, the only real problem I see with this gun/platform is that .380 ammo is extremely scarce and expensive right now. So personally, I wouldn't be adding any .380 caliber guns to my collection until the ammo situation improves (which it probably will over the next 12 months or so).
I disagree with the premise that every collection "needs" a 1911. I like 1911s, but what you "need" is dependent on your particular situation, including legal jurisdiction, budget, ability to use the gun, availability of ammo, and other factors.
In general, the all steel design and complicated machining necessary to build a 1911 usually makes them more expensive than more modern polymer-frame guns (not to mention heavier and with lower capacity). Reliable subcompact 1911s, in particular, tend to be fairly expensive.
So given the request for a sub-$600 subcompact, I'm not sure there are any good 1911-type guns in a "service" caliber (eg 9mm luger or bigger) that qualify.0 -

I'd say that Beantownshootah has nailed it for you.
If you want a carry gun that is different from the XD that yo are used to, see if a local range has any for rent. Glocks of every model are usually readily available. Many others can be found for rent, but maybe not as often as a Glock.
try them out, see what you like and go with it. If you can't rent them, try something that feels good in your hands, buy it, put a few hundred rounds through it. If you don't like it after that, you can always list it here and get back some of what you paid, then move on to the next one on your list.
