Rifle scope ???

I am looking to purchase a quality hunting scope. 450 to 500 $ is the limit on what i can afford. I WANT AMERICAN MADE. I have had good luck with a simmons 44mag but recently purchased a burris fullfield II. I am just looking for suggestions and some knowledge on what to look for to tell if it is a quality scope.

    B_Mc,

    Now that you have had a Burris Fullfield II, try their Signature line. You can't go wrong by going up. You will be able to see the difference in Quality. For that price range, you might also try a Sightron SII Big Sky model. They are great also.

    You might want to relax your American made issue. My understanding is that even the classic American brands import components for assembly. Do a search as this subject has gone around any number of times in the recent past. With any luck HeDog will weigh in and I think that I remember that he is very knowlegable on the subject. Also what kind of rifle/cartridge and hunting is the scope going to be used for.....

    Unfortunately, this is true. Most anything you find of quality in the $400-$500 range will be made in Japan. The Burris scopes in that price range are assembled in America. But, most of the parts come from overseas. Same with Leupold. Redfield and Weaver are made in Japan. FWIW, you won't go wrong with Japanese made scopes. For a long time now they have been at the forefront in very affordable quality.
    Also, it seems to be the worst range

    Another vote for Burris, I only have "cheap" scopes i.e. $200 or less and my fullfield II is the best of them all. When I step up, I'm sticking with Burris

    greedy american wages and overpriced labor forced american companies to have their parts manufactured elsewhere so the cost could be kept somewhat reasonable. Therefore,..YES many scopes parts are manufactured in other countries,.and then assembled in the US. It does need to be mentioned however that European and Japanese Glass have since long been better glass than US made glass. In order to give the customer a quality product, at a good price, the companies have had to outsource production.

    Let's look at the top end scopes,....Nightforce, IOR Valdada, Schmidt & Bender, Zeiss, etc all have their glass made in Europe or Japan. Simple answer is because their glass is better than what we can produce here.

    There is nothing wrong with a good used Redfield 2x7 or 3x9 from the 60's or 70's. They are American made and very good quality.

    Schmidt and Bender is the only company in the WORLD that builds their scopes entirely in hous. Every single other builder of scopes outsources some of their parts even if they assemble them all.

    Burris Signature Select is the scope for you.

    You may wish to seriously consider some good or high quality used scopes, such as Leupold, Burris, Redfield, and others. You may be able to get an almost new condition one that initially retailed for $500 or $600 for half of that. Pawnshops, gunstores, classifieds, and other places seem to be full of them.

    I am still using a Leupold VX II 3 X 9 AO that is over 30 years old. This scope still works well and could probably be purchased for $100 or $200 used today.

    Also, last Fall I fell and broke a Leupold VariX III 3.5 x 10 AO, that I had bought new over 30 years ago. It was an excellent scope, and could probably be purchased for around $250 used today. I believe that Leupolds of this era were made in the US.

    I would definitely try searching this website for used scopes that may fulfill your needs.

    I've used the Sightron SII and love it, also like the Nikon Monarch. Never used Burris but have heard no bad for the price range your talking. The price range your in I feel gives an excellent hunting scope. Now if you need a target/varmit scope you might need more $, IMO.
