OLD REMINGTON SXS 12 GA.
A friend of mine has a brother who is quite ill. She asked me to look at his six guns and find some info on his shotgun. A very old Remington 12 ga. side by side with exposed hammers and two triggers.
It has the hammers hit two round buttons at the back of the barrels.
You push the lever behind the action up and it breaks open. Then the extractors lift the shells. Any info on year of manufacture and what it might be worth? Thanks in advance.

It is a Remington-Whitmore, the first Remington double shotgun. It might be a model of 1874 or 1876. There was a model of 1878 but those were all 10 gauge.
If an 1874, the opening lever will be marked A.E. Whitmore's Patent Aug 8 1871. If not, then it is an 1876.
They were made from 1874 up into the middle 1880s in quantity of "several thousand."
Sorry I can't date it any closer and I won't guess a dollar value.0
