You need only send the upper barreled receiver (AKA tuning fork) and not the complete pistol to have the work done. It can be mailed without restrictions.
If you can have your barrel bored, rifled & rechambered for $150 or less it might be the best way to get to 9mm and keep it looking original. Exterior barrel dimensions are essentially the same.
The 30 cal Luger cartridge is a dog in 4" barrels but can be handloaded to serious velocities in a 6" barrel. J. Kronfeld, in an American Rifleman article 9/98, got up to 1490 fps out of a 6" barrel with an 85 gr XTP bullet. He shoots prarie dogs with his.
At the time of the article, Numrich Arms had replacement barrels on two lengths for both calibers if you want to build a spare upper.

Sorry, I don't have any names at hand but I do believe there are a few who will rebore, ream and rerifle barrels to larger calibers. The latest Gun Digest or Google may come up with them. 0 -

the local machine shop owner is a gun guy and he says he could bore it out, but "i ain't never tried puttin' in rifling...."[;)][:D]0 -

or the experience.

If you strike out on reboring and elect to change barrels, circumcise
the barrel with a cutting tool about 1/32-1/16" forward of the receiver to a depth of about 3/16" deep. This will relieve compressive stresses in the barrel's shoulder and allow you to easily remove it
without damaging the receiver or its' finish.0 -

thanks for the leads! I'll start making phone calls and see what's available. I went ahead and bought a 9mm barrel (it was only 50 bucks!) so now i can do the conversion either way. actually, i haven't seen the barrel yet, supposed to be in "good" condition. ([?])
I'm guessing the folks you listed for machining could do a swap too.
