    Hi I am bidding on a S&W 9mm pistol. I am looking at the ammo for this gun and it hits me what kind of volosity do these rounds have? All I see is not 230 grain.What kind of knock down power do they have verses the old millitary 45 cal. semi-auto side arm? What is the best kind of ammo for practice and also for shooting in self defense?[?]

    I would stay away from Taurus as their quality the past few years has been hit or miss. Ruger also had a recall on their early SR9's if I remember correctly. I would still take the Ruger over the Taurus. Before I done anything, I would look at the Springfield Armory XD line up, as well as the S&W M&P's, and the Ruger P-series.

    You know, there are MANY comparably priced 9mms on the market you could consider, but assuming these are the only two you are willing to pick from, consider the following:

    Are you going to try to carry this thing, or just shoot it at the range?

    If you want to carry it concealed, the Ruger is lighter, and probably better for that purpose.

    The Taurus, IMO, makes a better range gun.

    I also agree with Mr. Friendly. I don't think you'd find many who wouldn't agree that the Taurus is the cosmetically nicer gun. Still, the gun you hit better with is likely the better choice. Missing your target never looks good! [;)]

    Im looking for a range gun, just something i can have fun with, id say im open to any pistol but im not really looking for a compact pistol, to me i think the size of the sr9 is about as small as id like to go( like i said not wanting to use as a concelled pistol)

    Look at a Taurus 99. The adjustable sights are worth a little extra. I have one that I have used in IDPA competition for years. It has over 35,000 rounds thru it and still going strong.

    CZ will fit the bill and a great shooter which ever 9 you chose

    If those are your ONLY two choices - I would, personally, pick the Ruger. I've had the opportunity to handle and fire both and I found the SR9 to be handier and a bit more accurate. Ruger has solved the problem they had early in the SR9 production schedule.
