HK USP 9mm X 19mm

My son and I each purchased a new Heckler & Koch Model USP cal. 9mm pistol in 1998. At the shooting range, they jammed on the first clip. We thought it might be the shells, etc. so we bought different brand shells and they still jammed. Does anyone know anything about these guns and possible reasons they would jam? Any information is appreciated. Thank you.

    OK. . .anyway, unless you are using some sort of unusual target ammo, or non-standard ammo (ie hollowpoints, etc), its probably not the ammo.

    Any ordinary ball ammo from a reputable manufacturer (eg Winchester, Remington, Federal, Speer, etc) ought to cycle any of these guns fairly reliably.

    And its also pretty unlikely that BOTH of you got bad guns or magazines.

    I agree with Mr. Friendly. New guns often contain grease or other debris that requires cleaning. Break out the instruction manual, disassemble the gun, clean thoroughly with your favorite gun-cleaning product (I happen to like "Breakfree CLP"), reassemble, and try again.

    Also, new guns often require some break-in period of a few hundred rounds before they will work 100% reliably, though they still shouldn't jam on every single round.

    If those things don't fix the problem, consider "limp wristing", eg you have to hold any semi-auto gun fairly firmly when you shoot it, or it will jam since the slide needs the resistance of your hand to push against to load reliably.

    There are other potential causes, but none of them are that likely.
