    From what I have READ, two more inches of barrel is not likely to stabilize a 100 grain Nosler in a 12 twist .244.
    Maybe that is why Nosler makes a 95 grain partition.

    I have one of those 722's in .244. Mine will not handle 100 gr. Hornady BTSP's but shoots 100 gr. Sierra flat base just fine. My records show I've fired 10 5-shot groups that averaged 1.38". The velocity of my load chronographed at just over 3100 fps. I have not tried Noslers.

    Who knows...all rifles are different regardless of what we read... try a 105gr boat tail and see what happens. Frankly more of what is said is talk rather than "walk". Any way you cut it... the 6mm is a great round!

    As Hawk indicated above, the 95 grain Nosler may be a good candidate to consider. I have used it in my 240 Weatherby with good results on deer and pronghorns, with both good accuracy and good killing performance.

    I am also becoming more interested in the Barnes all copper bullets, although I have not actually tried them. They are generally lower in grains, but very tough, and good ballistic coefficients.

    I assume that you have read the history on the .244 and its 1 in 12 twist, and how the .243 Winchester with its faster twist outsold it.
    The .244/6mm is a great cartridge, and I would encourage you to try some of the lighter bullets that should work well in it.

    I would suggest the Nosler 85 grain Partition for a premium bullet or the Hornady 87 grain. The factory loads were 90 grain so that would probably be optimum. Either of these bullets will give good results on deer. I used the 87 grain for years in a .243 Win and the partition is always a good choice. I loaded for a .244 a couple of times and found the most accurate load to be the 87 grain Hornady and it performed well on antelope.

    Remington loaded their .244 cartriges with 75gr and 90gr bullets. The 100gr bullet didn't come out until the 6mm Remington 1/9 twist rifles were adopted. 75gr is best. Remember..it's a varmint design.

    The .244 is really an excellent varminter. With the 1/12 twist, I shoot 75gr spitzers that have slightly more velocity than 5.56 55gr M196 rounds. And that's the starting load!! Also, better accuracy than .223/5.56 if the wind is above zero. Best, Joe

    The above thread is a very good discussion on bullet LENGTH vs. twist.

    The ogive on a bullet varies from brand to brand, as does the presence of taper base or boat tail. Type & material of tip also varies. all factors that will vary length for a given weight & cal. Just to say 100 gr. 244 cal bullet is not enough info. It is the bullet length in relation to the bore diameter that determines stability.

    Todays bullet makers have gotten competitive in their marketing with "flavor of the month" style changes. Throw in the "greenies" push toward lead free & all copper bullets to further spread the 'length vs. weight' relations.

    In short, a wild azz guess for the starting point & experimentation is probably the best way to match a certin bullet with a given rifle.
    Method two is a good computer program, percision measuring tools, & a sample of each bullet within a given weight area to be considered.
    BUT! because rifle X will shoot SUPER KILLER NEAT POINTED ON BOTH ENDS HOT CORE BONDED & CHILLED X5X 95 grain bullets well, don't jump to the conclusion it will perform the same with all 95 gr. bullets.

    The actual shooting & loading is a whole lot more fun than the figur'en. Once you find a workable combo. I suggest you stock up (as in buy bulk) because your choice will likely not be avalible next year.

    My Rem 722 in 244 cal shot the Sierra semi pointed flat base 100 grain bullets into one hole at 100 yards. Unfortunately, that bullet design has chanced to a longer profile & fancy name. When my supply of preferred bullets ran out, I traded the gun to a friend that was looking for a varmit rifle.

    Our bullet manufacturers are slowly catching up with the internet and the increased desire of shooters to understand and know more about the components used in their sport.

    Because of design and material differences, weight is not the factor used in determining twist rate, it's bullet length. In this vein, the Greenhill formula can provide the very most basic understanding of the concept. Unfortunately, there have been significant improvements in components as well as propellants so the aged Greenhill formula suffers from a lack of updating. There are some simple free calculators available online which will help you with some 'what if' questions without actually loading and shooting. These will aid you in helping you to understand the parameters needed for specific twist rates.

    In general terms, your question can be answered this way:

    Given a muzzle velocity of 3100 FPS. you can expect stability from bullets that are approximately 0.955" in length. I have gotten some slightly longer bullets to remain stable by boosting the velocity but this is not always possible or advisable.

    This leaves the weight range in the 90 gr. department without specifically testing individual bullet designs. Obviously there will be exceptions and this forum is too short to allow for listing every exception to every statement.

    Now with regard to 'talking the talk and walking the walk' mentioned above:

    Statements such as have been made about the heavy Boat Tail bullets being a viable test case are not reasonable at all. First, they are too long to be stabilized with a 1:12" twist barrel and second the Boat Tail is one of the details in bullet design that often preclude using slower twist rates. This is fact, not conjecture and folks that know this wouldn't waste another shooter's time with such a suggestion.

    I totally agree with Nononsense on this matter, and have experience with a slow twist 722 like the one in question. The short answer to your question is no...it will not stabalize the 100 grain bulets of conventional lead core design, consistently, if at all.

    If you are thinking of this as a deer round, please consider the Barnes 85 grain TSX bullet. due to the increase in velocity because of lower weight of the all copper bullet...it has no leas core..., I have has good results with a 1 in 12 twist. I also have a 243 that likes them, as well as the now out of production Barnes XLC, that weighs in at 85 grains also.

    There was an old gunzine article - Gun Digest or Handloader's Digest - whose author found he could make his 12 twist .244 shoot a 100 grain flatbase spitzer. By cutting off most of the exposed lead softnose to shorten it a fraction of an inch, leaving him with about a 97 grain "protected point."
