30-30 Plinking Ammo

What do the experts suggest. The offerings are too varied for me.

I just want to fire a 30-30 Winchester on a range; no hunting, no target--just punching holes in paper (hopefully).

All suggestions welcomed.

    Winchester white box is about the cheapest i've seen in awhileI use to do pretty good at georgia arms but they haven't had any for awhileI don't even know what their price is right now

    Not to beg the question, but whatever's cheapest makes the best plinking ammo.

    I think the limiting factor here is going to be what you can actually find, not which brand is more or less accurate, etc.

    The low-end stuff from Wolf, Remington, or Federal all run about $15 per box, and are probably your best bet, again, limited to what you can get your hands on.

    So just go for cheapest price? I've seen 20 rounds at $14.00 from Sportsmansguide. Guess that's where I'll go (will check with Wallyworld first though).

    If you watch gunbroker auctions, you can find 200 round cases of Remington 30-30 150 gr or 170 gr Core Lokt cartridges from KY Imports in Louisville, Kentucky at a very reasonable price. Even with shipping, the overall cost is much less than you could buy them from either Wal Mart or Sportsmans wherehouse.

    If you can even find some anymore PMC made some outstanding Cowboy Action .30/30 that used 170 grain lead bullet that was very very light recoiling(1500fps/849 ftlbs). I used it in 100 year old Winchesters with no issues. You can sometimes still find it on the auction side or at gun shows--you can of course make your own. I found 1 auction for it.http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=141557604 sadly I used to be able to buy it for $10 a box[:(] They made several types of .30/30 but the one with the light recoil is made up like an old west box--not the same stuff as their Starfire or Bronze line. Really wish PMC still made it because the Ultramax & Ten X cowboy loads are expensive.

    Midway has Prvi Partizan for $13.79 but of course it is on backorder--I have never used that brand either.

    Or you can reload to whatever levels you desire.

    I take a .358 lead ball, run it through a .308 sizing die with a gas check under it and create a 60 grain, 30 caliber, gas checked bullet. A little Alox and it's good to go.

    Load it with about 5.6 grains of Bullseye and it hits a Coke can dead center at 40 yards. Barely makes any noise at all, no recoil, fun to shoot. Cheap too.

    Also have loaded .30 caliber balls in 30/30 cases, slightly less charge and about the same performance.

    dO you reload,or have access to a loader?
    I shoot 170 grain cast lead bullets over 10 grains of Unique,and it's quite accurate and abouts as mild a load as you can imagine.
    Be advised to get any and all jacket material out of the bore before shooting lead,most guns don't shoot well otherwise,but ymmv.
