Japanese Konji Characters on Arisaka Sling
One of my Marine buddies has an Arisaka type 38 that he purchased from a veteran of the battle for Okinawa. There are some Konji characters hand painted on the inside of the leather sling that my son, who lives in Japan and speaks fluent Japanese, translated to "ma 177" He thinks it probably refers to the unit that the soldier belonged to that the rifle was issued.
Are there any knowledgeable historians/Arisaka collectors out there that might be able to shed some light on this topic?
Thanks.
