Hopins & Allen pistol questions
Looking for answers about another old timer which just arrived today. This is the Hopkins & Allen Single Shot Target. I'm unable to find any info about it IN any of the reference books I have available.
Here is a description given by a large company hoping to sell the one they have: "Introduced in 1913, these single action pistols were later assembled by The Marlin Firearms Corporation beginning in 1922. Adjustable notch rear sight and blade front sight on a barrel marked with the one line Norwich address. Nickel finish with casehardened hammer and trigger. Matching serial number on barrel underside, bottom of the monoblock and front grip strap. Fitted with walnut grips with brass Hopkins and Allen monogram inserts at the tops."
Assuming what they've said is correct, Can anyone add to this info. For example: how many were poduced? I also learned from some (?) source that the gun was made from 1907 to 1917. That info above says it wasn't introduced until 1913 - NOT 1907. Which, if either, is correct?

charles carder's book on Hopkins & Allen Firearms gives a tenative date of 1910 and shows the parts diagram for this pistol in H&A.s parts catalog of 1911. my guess would be 1910/1911. it was offered with 6, 8 & 10 inch barrel lengths as a pistol and a 18 inch barrel rifle complete with detachable shouder stock (H&A catalog #15 dated 1913)
blue book (30th edition) values for this pistol are 100%=$565 down to 60%=$250 and a complete rifle (with shoulder stock 100%=$850 down to 60%=$465.
this is the only H&A handgun i would feel safe in firing modern 22 rimfire ammo in but because of the age i would limit the firing to 22 shorts only.
marlin did assemble (no new production) some of this model and a couple of other H&A firearms (revolver and shotguns) after wwI. they were not given any marlin markings and after the parts were used up there were no more.
at some unknown date numrich arms aquired the H&A name and used it on a line of single shot 22 rimfire rifles and imported flintlock and percussion rifles, 1960 thru 1970.

Thanks for the info, Bill. I had forgotten I even owned the 5th Edition of Gun Collector's Digest, when I stumbled over it late last night. In an article titled, "The Single Shot Target Pistol in the U.S. 1870-1940" by Allen W. Terek, the author dates the pistol to, "Between 1906 and 1915...," and also says, ..."about 2500 were manufactured..."
Further on he had high praise for many commendable "firsts" H&A had incorporated into their new match pistol, some, he says, had mistakenly been attributed to other companies. And still later he goes into a somewhat lengthy explanation of the part Marlin played in the end game. All fascinating reading which I nearly missed.
Bill, if you have that Carder book, is there any chance you might be kind enough to scan the parts diagram and email it to me? Meanwhile I'll check with Abby over at Cornell to see if she's offering reprints of the 1911 H&A catalog.

Here's one that might stump you - it surely threw me for a loop. I'm trying to complete a trade for a WAMO Tommy Gun, .22rf single shot rifle. What kind of info have you got on that little cutie?

Sorry to have bothered you, Bill. I found that 1911 catalog at Cornell and wrote Abby to check on a couple of H&As I've got. So don't go to any trouble on my request, 'cause I believe it should be in the reprint she's offering.
