Colt M4 .22 Long Rifle tactical carbine

I purchased the tactical Colt M4 carbine. The first attempt was with antique long rifle ammuniton which I had inherited. The fail to fire rate was about 90%. I was told I would have to use high velocity, which I did. However, this resulted in almost a 100% failure to chamber. It also shaved lead off each bullet. The gunsmith cleaned it out and used a copper "jacketed" high velocity round. It fired fine, for him. However, I noticed the rounds were long rather than long rifle. The antique long rifle rounds at least chambered. I have not yet used "jacketed" long rifle. Do I have an ammmunition problem, or what? Also, the retaining pin has to be pounded out with a hammer and punch to open the weapon for serious cleaning. Is this typical?
