Hi, will 7.9 ammo work in a 8mm rifle.

huggybear44....German Mauser ammo is 7.92x57 but typically referred to as 8mm. So, if you are talking about a German Mauser, the answer is yes. Good shooting! 0 -

Technically so called "8mm Mauser" ammo is actually properly known as 7.92x57mm, or sometimes just 7.9.
If that's what you are talking about, yes, it should work fine in an ordinary "8mm" Mauser rifle.

There are a few cravats. 7.9 comes in two rimless flavors, .323 and .318. The latter is for Model 88 type rifle systems and the former is for Model 98 rifle systems. There is also a rimmed version used in drillings.

I'll agree with the caveats. But the .318's were not necessarily restricted to the model 88's. Many civilian model 98's, built long after the 1905 military change, used the smaller diameter. Although I do believe they were called 7.8mm's. There is also a rimmed version of the smaller diameter.
If that sounds confusing...it can be. Just make sure of what you have before you put a cartridge in there and fire it. Once you get that, take it out and have a lot of fun shooting it[:D]0
