    looking for info on a Winchester Model 1897 16 gauge .. serial # C 184338
    and any idea of value

This is potentially a collectable gun... but without knowing if it is still 100% factory original and what the graded condition is, it could be worth anywhere from $200 to $2500.

For reference purposes, just this past June I added a standard Field grade 16 gauge Model 1897 (C 182360) to my personal collection. It is a high condition gun (85%+), and I gave $850 for it. The fellow who had it is a personal friend of mine, and he reduced the price from $1100.

Does your gun have a 28-inch FULL choke barrel, or something else?

Serial number C 184338 was manufactured in the latter part of the year 1902.

Your gun has a 28-inch barrel (which was standard for
    the 16 gauge guns).

Only the pictures of the gun can tell me that. Like I said, I just bought one that is identical to your gun, but mine is an 85%+ condition gun, and I happily pid $850 for it.
