Contender bbls bore/chamber not concentric?

I was reading an article recently written by someone who does a lot of custom work on these. He said T/C does a fairly poor job of centering the chambers to the bores on their .22 centerfires, especially .223.

Can anyone else confirm or deny this?

    That is actually true for a lot of guns.

    Unless you are planning on putting on a silencer I am not sure how big of a deal that is.

    When I had one of my 10/22 barrels done for a silencer the smith centered it up on the bore, NOT the outside of the barrel. While it was turning in the lathe it looked like a jump rope. I was shocked. He said it was very common on anything but high end guns or good custom barrels.

    Well, according to this author the problem was bad enough to be visible with the naked eye. Said he had seen them so far off that the chamber reamer didn't even cut the tops of the rifling on one side, i.e. no lead.

    * Maybe I should clarify - the chamber was not concentric to the bore, without respect to the O.D. of the barrel.

    ** Maybe co-axial would have been a better word.

    The listing is about failure to align the chamber with the bore NOT with the outside of the barrel. A gun with a nonconcentric chamber and bore is a piece of junk.

    +1 on glabray the chamber reamer should have a pilot that is .0005 smaller then the bore this is one of the most important areas of any barrel I have a 45ACP reamer with 5 different Pilots to match the bore of my pistol barrels. Ask a bench rest gun smith the 2 most important areas of a barrel is the chamber and the crown.

    Mr. Bill,

    I have & shoot a Thompson Contender with 22 barrels in Hornet, 22Jet, 222, & 223. All have delivered accuracy far above my abilities.

    I have yet to see or hear of anyone with a problem such as you describe. The T.C. being a production gun as most sporting arms are, almost anything can happen. I believe most companys have had their own Boo-Boo's but fortunately their QC dept.s catch the most; Same with T.C.

    Could the writer have been expounding on an isolated case for the purpose of selling some high end after-market barrels?

    If such an off-center bore job exists, contact T.C. customer service. If they don't bend over backwards to fix/replace the bad piece, then you have NEWS & we all would like to know.

    Thanks for the replies and esp. thanks to cusser. I can't find the article just now, but this guy was scaring me with his observations about T/C factory barrels.

    I'm planning to put together a .223 or maybe .222 scoped pistol and I'm trying to get a free education [;)]

    My T-C Super 14-223 is a tack driver. I don't see how T-C would mess up anything bad enough to pass through the quality control people.
    All the T-C's I've owned and shot,12 of them, shot very good.

    ANY PROBLEM AT ALL--TC will make it right--just ask them.
    I've had tons of them and never saw one that bad....
    Anything that was suspect was immediately replace by them...

    only thing I can see is the Encore 22LR barrel is NOT center bored, has to do with not having a "rim fire" selectable hammer like the early Contender.

    T/C is not the only ones who have QC problems,Remington does to.
