Can a Ruger .458 Win Mag Tropical

Rifle be safely re-chambered to .460 Weatherby Magnum ??

    You will have to look at the action length, magazine length, & bolt face.

    Have you considered the 458 Lott? by simply lengthening the chamber (assuming the action & magazine are long enough) you get increased performance from the Lott loading plus you'll still be able to fire the Win Mag in the same chamber.

    The plus side of the Lott chamber is the bolt face stays the same there by saving $$.

    I've always wanted a .460 Weatherby Magnum, and there is a rather spendy #1 on the auction side in .458 Win Mag.

    Maybe I''ll try to get a Mark V.

    Doug unless you reload, the .460 is gonna be super expensive to feed--only a few ammo makers load for it-Weatherby being one and it's well over $100 for a box of shells. A-Square gives ya 10 rounds for over $80. The .458 can be found a little cheaper. But hey if you gotta have power the .460 has it in spades. My orthopedic surgeon used one to hunt elk, moose and African plains game-but he was a stout man of 6'4" and 275lbs so he could handle it. A while back there was a .460 for sale at the gun shop--with a piece of skin still attached to the scope from getting scope eye.

    If it were me and I HAD to have a .460 I'd do that--find a Weatherby and maybe shoot one before ya buy--cuz after you touch if off you might find it not so much fun[:D]

    Hi Doug,

    The case rim and belt diameter of the gigantic 460 weatherby are larger than that of the conventional H&H based magnum cartridges. The bolt face(or extractor in this case) would need to be opened up, and I am not sure if there is enough meat in the chamber area to safely open it up to the diameter's and length of the 460 Weatherby. It would be a good educated guess not...to error on the safe side. If you wanted it just to have, and NEVER shoot it wold be one thing...however, we kind of like your company here on the forums, and wish to keep the ole boy around for a bit...so don't do it.

    FROM YOUR ANSWER ABOVE IT APEARS YOU WANT TO RECHAMBER A RUGER #1 SINGLE SHOT IN .458 TO .460; THIS IS AN EASY JOB. IT ONLT REQUIRES A CHAMBER REAMER (AND H.S. GAGES), AND MAYBE SOME SLIGHT EXTRACTOR WORK.

    Can't address the other calibers, but the .458 Win. Mag., when handloaded with a 552gr Lyman casting, and XXXgr (don't remember the throw weight off hand) of Unique, makes a very nice, tame (tame?) everyday mid-range/target load that's cheap to shoot, and extraordinarily accurate.

    And you don't need a spotting scope to see where you are printing[:D] Best, Joe

    I have fired the .460 WM in the past, in a Mark V.

    The recoil was impressive, to say the least.

    I just want it, because I want it.

    I'll probably only put one or two rounds through it.

    Ever have an buy an iron for that reason ??

    Thanks for the guidance. I guess I'll wait for a deal on a Weatherby.

    I REALLY like Weatherbys, and they are a little easier to tote than the Barrett - and a LOT cheaper.
