Actually there wasn't any third release of the Colt SAA. They simply stopped the routine manufacturing of the 2nd production run of SAA's (you have that date), and went to special-order/custom shop production.

When they stopped the 2nd generation SAA's, the press fit cylinder bushing was started either late during the 2nd production run of SAA's (2nd generation), or the earlier style slip-bushing was carried into the special-order only (what is commonly called 3rd generation) SAA's until the parts bin was emptied. So, you can't identify a production 2nd generation from later special order guns on features alone.

Later, while still special order only, (3rd generation) Colt returned to the basepin/slip bushing combination. Both screw base and transverse pin models are available.

Recap: Use what you've got as the end of 2nd generation to determine 3rd generation. There are no distinct SerNo's to determine the special order guns (called 3rd generation). Some special order guns have an overlap with 2nd generation SAA's in the "SA" suffix jumping to the "SA" prefix, then to the "S"XXXXX"A" SerNo's. Now, with the return to the slip bushing, you can start to call new SAA's 4th generation! It's as valid as calling post-production guns 3rd generation. If you find the list you are looking for, please post it here, and we'll discuss the variables in greater detail.. Best, Joe
