S&W 637 missmarked model 642

Just got a S&W in from Distributor and its a M-637, marked on the box 637, but the Frame is marked 642. That is strange.

Smith says to send it back. Think there maybe a few more out there.
Is there any added value to a mismarked Smith like this?

    Its not as strange as you might think. Smith puts out zillions of guns. I think Smith is still putting out the greatest number of MODELS of handguns in the USA, if not (also) the greatest absolute number of handguns.

    So every so often somebody mislabels one or mistakenly (or deliberately) builds gun "A" on an identical frame from model "B". I've seen a number of apparently mislabelled guns with a similar story before. One dealer near Springfield MA (where the Smith factory is), told me that he sees some weird non-catalog variant walk through his store several times per year.

    Anyway, this is not the same thing as the upside down airplane stamp worth half a million dollars!

    In general, Smith 642s and 637s are amongst the most popular guns Smith sells. There are a gazillion of them out there, and these aren't collectible (yet), particularly not new manufacture ones with the MIM parts and internal locks.

    There may be minimal added value to a diehard collector, but even if you could find someone to pay more than the usual price for one like that, I doubt it would be much more.

    I'd give you another $10 for it, just for "ha-ha" value, but if you asked another $20, I'd rather spend it on a box of ammo!

    I have seen others. Most notably a 629 marked as being a 610 under the crane amd marked 610 classic on the barrel( in 44 cal).
