How to install Mauser 98 Extractor collar

Can any body give me any tips on installing a Mauser 98 extractor collar. It is the split ring on the bolt that the extractor slides over. I am aware of the " bolt extractor pliers" that are available through Brownells etc. but these are for installing the extractor on to the extractor collar. I need to install the extractor collar itself. Is there a special tool for this or any tricks to keep from springing the ring when trying to replace it onto the bolt? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

    It's a very soft metal. It just sort of bends on, no problem. No special tools needed. I just used my fingers.

    Do you slide it on any particular end of the bolt or are you springing it OVER the bolt?

    It's essentially a "C" ring. Grease the groove on the bolt, open the ring to get it started, and push it on sideways. It will be a little loose.

    Squeeze the ring tight, slide the extractor claw onto the ring. Once in place, the claw will keep the ring compressed, and it will be snug. Best, Joe

    As said before the ring is soft and spreads easily. Also as said grease the clip groove and snap the ring back into the groove. But as for getting the extractor back onto the ring lips I use my bench mounted vice with a thin strip of cardboard to compress the ring into the groove while holding the bolt body secure. Then you have to work the extractor back over the front of the bolt body and onto the ring lips which hold it secure.

    I find it easiest if you hold the bolt body with the first 3 thumbs on your left hand, grasp the new collar with the first 2 thumbs on your right hand, & while spreading the collar to push it over the reduced diameter area of the bolt body; watch which way it flies when you hear "SPROING"

    Seriously, ern98's suggestion to use cardboard & a vise is a SUPER tip!

    It's going to spread no matter what you do. Get it snapped into it's groove then compress it and get the extractor slid onto it and in place. I have a pair of nippers (like horse nippers, farrier, type one, one each) that you can gently squeeze the extractor ring closed. Then start the extractor onto the rails of the extractor ring. Once it's started get ready to tweak upward to get it to slide all the way and into place.

    I really appreciate all of you who responded to this! The info that you gave was definitely helpful. Job is complete everything worked just fine. As you guys suggested I used the grease in the groove of the bolt pressed extractor collar on over the bolt and slot while slightly and carefully springing the collar. It did "over spring" just a little as some of you assured me it would. I then placed the bolt into a padded vise and squeezed the extractor collar back together as was also suggested. This worked fine and saved the cost of the "extractor pliers." I then slid the extractor onto the protrusions on the collar tweaking the extractor up slightly in the front with a screwdriver to clear! Lined every thing up, slid the bolt back in and every thing is "honky dory!" Thanks to all of you this Mauser is ready to spit out 8mm projectiles again. I appreciate the Help!!
