Is there a way to remove the nickel finish from an old handgun?

  You can bead blast it off.

  If you soak it in Hoppes, it will disolve the finish.

  Depends on what you want it to look like when you are finished. You can take it to a plater and have then strip it or you can buy nickel stripper from Brownells and use that. I have used it and it works good.

  Hoppe's #9 will not dissolve or strip nickel plating. This is a myth.
  www.caswellplating.com sells a nickel stripping solution.
  Any plating shop can strip it for you.

  I agree Bill. Hoppes is not recommended for long term exposure to nickled surfaces and it will sometimes cause it to lift especially in the old guns where the plating process is not what it is today, but it is in no way a nickel stripper.

  someone on another forum said a weak acid, like vinegar and lemon juice will cause the plating to lift. don't know about that, but 60 grit aluminum oxide at 90 psi works well. recommend going over the bare metal with 90 grit at 90 psi for a finished surface. leaves just enough tooth for most all finished to be applied.
  with the 60 grit, blast perpendicular to the surface and go slow. you can round off corners if youre too aggressive with the 60. not really important with the 90 grit.
