Colt .38 Super

Curious about a gun I inherited from my grandfather, who purchased this gun new sometime in the mid to late 1940's (as I am told). I know it would be easier to estimate value with a picture but I don't have one at the moment. If I get interested in pursuing this further I would certainly take some photos and post. Right now just looking for general information and a general idea of value. What I have:

Colt Super .38 Automatic
Serial Number 44537
Also stamped on the gun is "Colt's PT.F.A. Mfg.Co"
"Hartford, CT USA"

The gun appears to be in used but pretty good overall condition. Looks to have original finish and grips.

Year manufactured? General range of value? Is this a desirable item for collectors?

    Need to find out the value of my Col .38 Super. It has a six digit Serial Number 197XXX, excellent condition, still in its original Colt box with instruction booklet.

    Wait a minute before rebluing The pictures are not close enough to really let us tell but I think from what I see it may be original made in 1968. We need detail Close up of all marks on BOTH the slide and frame. we can tell the most from Macro pictures from about 6 inches away.

    email me on my profile with your direct email address and I will show you what your pictures need to look like You get crappy results if you don't use NATURAL LIGHT and you can't get a good shot with a spot type flash. the two shots with the serial blanked out the close up one looks factory finish but the same area of the same pistol on the longer distance shot looks SMEARED like a reblue. I already know what the serial number is from your first pictures the reason as asked for markings ids because this area is the first to get smeared by a buffing wheel. used by most people that reblue . WE need to look at how sharp the EDGE of each letter and number. is when you photo shopped you blanked out the most important part of the shot.

    Nice Colt. Who are you thinking of having do the work (I can't tell if it's been reblued, myself)

    A tip on Colt's blue: seems to me that your Super may have been done in 'carbona' blue originally. I have a Colt made in 1920 that could use restoration. I may do it, may not. But I called Colt to talk to them about it.

    Long story short- they may be able to get me a letter, and they may- or may not- even want to do the work. They want me to send them the pistol for evaluation on my dime. And to top it off- they don't do carbona blue

    But I did talk to Turnbull restoration. They'd be more than happy to do it, and in the original carbona blue, too. Colt gave me no warm fuzzies. Turnbull acted as if they'd like me as a customer. Just as an FYI

    I would leave it alone. Finish looks original to me.
