5,7x28 fn pistol
i am seeking advice and opinions on this.
no need to discuss shot placement or the extra benefit of firing more rounds, quick recovery, low recoil etc.
i favor 9mm and have several.
the 5.7 would be for sd. and i would like to know if its just a hornet or 22mag. i hear that it has more stopping power due to what happens to the bullet on impact.
any help is appreciated.

Stick with 9's unless you just got $1000 that's burning a hole in your pocket. Up close and personal, serious social situations, not going to make any difference unless body armor is involved. In that case definitely go with the FN, that's what the round was designed for. Since that particular bullet is proscribed for the sheeple. Your going to be paying big bucks just to be able to getting your hands on some. The over the counter stuff they sell for the FN has been neutered, and won't penetrate the high class body armor. 0 -
The ONLY advantage to the 5.7 over any other pistol round is the ability to penetrate body armor IF you are shooting the AP ammo that the gun was made for.
If you are only using standard 5.7 ammo and against non armor targets I think you will be disappointed.
If you want a cool round I dont remember the name and it was a wildcat. It was chambered in a Glock 10mm. They took a 10mm and necked it down to .224 and was shooting 62gr bullets at something between 2000 and 2500 fps.0 -
There is atleast one company that makes 5.7x28 specialty ammo that out performs anything sold by FN... I'd do a search to find out who this company is and go from there.
the FN LFHP Practice loads are the only ones I find impressive.0 -
Quality piece. FN dosn't make junk. I would say pass on it for what you are looking. Rather expensive & ammo isn't cheap. Yes, recoil is minimal but as others have said it has the ability to penetrate armor w/ the original hi-perf ammo that is even less "cheap". I would go with the 9. Huge handgun options available to you & ammo is cheap (well compartivly speaking). Having said all of this I have 2 FN 5.7 w/ consectuitive S/N & love them! 0 -

Regular old SS195 is pretty impressive too. Note this test is through ballistic armour, but not done with armour piercing SS190.

I bought a quantity of the original SS192, at $15 per box I might add, and this ammo is some what hotter than recent loads.
5.7x28 is one of the few rounds that has been available lately and hasn't seen a huge price increase. I still see it for sale at $18 per box.0 -

That's actually kinda slow considering you can do 2100fps out of a G20 using a 6" Lone Wolf or Barsto barrel in 9x25 Dillon with a 90gr round(10mm necked down to 9mm). http://www.doubletapammo.com/php/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_24&products_id=470 -

IMO this round makes sense from a p90 SUBMACHINE gun, where the combination of high (eg full auto) rate of fire and penetration from AP rounds make up for the low intrinsic power of the cartridge.
For close quarters/urban type combat, this could make a good gun.
But from a pistol? I suppose having one might make sense if you could share mags with your submachine gun, but as a civilian defensive weapon? I don't think so.
I see the pistol as basically a costly toy/conversation piece.
The gun and ammo aren't cheap, nor are they available at your local Walmart.
If you are a civilian you don't really need the armor piercing ammo (and can't legally get it anyway). Without it, you've got what is essentially a high capacity .22 magnum pistol.
IMO for a carry gun you're better off with a 9mm luger.0 -
it is called a .224 boz. goal was 2300 fps + , and light armor penetration as well as rifle like hyrodynamic shock in soft tissue. i heard atf ruled it "non-sporting" whatever that means
