    Ralph- I have a couple of 550-1s- some have the dovetail groove, earlier ones do not, and I use regular mounts on the top of those. There ARE a couple of screw holes for the shell deflector that are offset- not referring to those holes, are you??

    No, there are four holes that have been drilled and tapped to the rear of the shell deflector but on the same side as the shell deflector securing bolt/screw. There is 3/8" between each hole and 2 3/8" between the sets as shown below:

    |3/8" |<- 2 3/8" ->|3.8"|

    The rifle was a gift when I was 13 yrs. old and the scope was a gift the following year. I have always used the rifle with iron sights and as a result I fired expert with the M1 Carbine when I was 18 yrs old in basic training. However, I am using the rifle at the range now at 100 yards with the rear ramped all the way up. It still fires well but the shooter needs some assistance with the scope now days.
