PRIVI bullets
I'm looking for some thoughts and opinions on PRIVI bullets. I've recently loaded some into .303 British and shot them from a couple of my Enfields. They look OK and load fine but I'm getting erratic accuracy, including two keyholes, from rifles I've never had trouble with before. Not sure if its the bullets or I just can't shoot as well as I used to.

I wish I read this BEFORE buying 300 Privi 150 grainers (from Grafs, right?) for my 303. [:(]
I've not had a problem with their bullets, but I use them for general shooting not match or to test acuracy loads. Some of their bullets have a very different shape from the other companies - I bought some 308 diameter 190 FMJBT and had to seat them deep as heck to avoid hitting the rifling.
But in general they've done OK for me.0 -
Just to clarify here, the nominally .303 British cartridge is supposed to take rounds .311 of an inch in diameter.
Some of the Enfield rifles can have bores that actually mike out all the way to .318".
You didn't specify which exact bullets you were loading, but in these slightly oversized bores, "ordinary" .308 caliber rounds might yield less than optimal accuracy.0 -
I went back and mic'ed some of the bullets. They measured .311 but, since they come in a loose bag, I have to wonder if there weren't some .308's mixed in there. Had better luck with the 174 gr. FMJBT than the 150 gr. Both rifles were two grooves ao need to try them in my good four grove SMLE and try them in my Jap Type 99 and see if that works any better. 0 -
I bought some PRVI 150-grain softnose bullets that were .310, from Graf. I pulled the bullets from Com-Bloc brass-cased 148-grain ammo and substituted the Graf bullets, using the original powder charges and primers. I did the firing in a 1939 Tula 91/30 which has pipe dimensions of .300/.312. The bullets grouped better than any of the different kinds of factory military ammo, and the military stuff itself was routinely turning in groups of 2 MOA or less (1 inch) at 50 meters (55 yards). The Mosin twist rate may have liked the somewhat shorter lead-core Graf bullets (at least at that particular velocity), better.
Loss of shooting skills will never result in keyholes. As Beantownshootah says, suspect the bullet/bore relationships.
Dangest thing was when I thought I'd try some 203-grain Barnaul softnose in an M38 Carbine. I fired a fouling shot and then fired the next four shots in the magazine at the paper, for determining sight regulation. They went into one hole (not into a cloverleaf, but into one bullet hole). You never know what you're gonna get. It's too bad that the Russians don't export their bullets as a reloading component, but as they are now sending us primers, via Wolf, who knows...0 -
I've had great luck shooting my Prvi Partizan bullets through any rifle caliber that uses them. Especially the .303 (.311") 174 sps's through my Argentino's (carbine and long rifle). My enfield held decent accuracy with them as well. I should as decent as it normally gets 3"-5" @ 100 yds. I did get a bunch of 165's for my K31 and .308 and they shot great. The K-31 did a couple 1" groups @ 100. (amazing rifle)
None of these rifles that I shoot though with these are of benchrest quality. Just trying to get the best groups I can from old rifles.
So, overall I would say I've gotten very good results from PRVI Partizan. You may have gotten a bad lot. As noted it's not shooting ability that makes bullets keyhole.0 -
most enfields will shoot the 174gr and up better than the 150 gr bullets.my enfield doesnt like 150gr but it loves the 174gr 0
