Grandfather's Remmington derringer question

My grandfather's old derringer has come into my possesion. It's a double barrel, and he had it back in the early 1900's, about 1920-30. The gun seems to be complete, but shows its age. I don't know if the gun is serviceable or not, as I am not a gun enthusiast.

Would this item have any collector value? Thanks!

    If all original and in good condition these are collector grade guns rather then shooters the ammo 41 RIM FIRE is still available but very weak and not easy to obtain.

    Value depends greatly upon condition. The nearer it's condition to the day it was sold the better. That is why photos are requested, without seeing the conditon all anyone can say is, "yes, it might have value." At 10% of original condition, it will not have much. At 90% it will bring a lot more. Changes from original, like replaced grips and such also detract from the value.

    You might try the two large net gun auctions. The Remington .41 Derringers were made in quantity, over a period of 50 years. They still show up on the auctions regularly. Check the actual selling price, not some of the ridiculous asking prices.

    That said, it's not the best of times to be selling anything, to many folks are hurting money wise. The only antique stuff that will readily sell, are mint condition collectors items, or guns that are being virtually given away money wise.

    None of the Remington derringers is considered "serviceable"; i.e., suitable to be fired. All are weak in the hinge area, hence many are found with broken/repaired hinges. It should be considered a "collector" firearm.

    To add to the good info so far, hinge is ofen found broken and some are repaired. If person dropped a pistol with the barrel unbreeched, hinge open, it was likely to break the hinge. As for value, in old brown gun condition, rusty and a little pitted, it will bring over $200 if it is complete, undamaged and functional. As stated above condition is the main determining value factor. Average condition showing its use and abuse but with about half the original blue finish they sell in mid hundreds. Values increase with better condition. As others say, good pictures will enable someone to give more specific info.
