Crimping 223 and 7.62x39 for auto loader

Is it absolutely necessary to crimp the bullet on these auto loaders? What if the bullet has no crimping ring?

Due to the functioning of the gas operated semi auto rifles for these cartridges, some folks feel that a heavy crimp is mandatory.

Lee makes a specific crimping die for these cartridges. It's called a "Factory Crimp Die".

I have had no issues. Go to the range, load up a full magazine, fire about five shots then take the round that is in the chamber out. Measure its over all length. If it is the same as it started, don't crimp.

IMO Crimping for a Semi auto is a good idea. No sense in taking a chance of creating pressure and accuracy problems. The Lee Factory Crimp Die mentioned by Rufe-snow will create it's own cannelure. They work great and don't cost much.

Use a taper crimp die, eliminates feeding problems and extends the life of the brass.

I won't load for auto's without a crimp. It will only take that 1 in a 1000 bullet shoved back into the case to show the errors of your way.
