When the Model 70 come full circle sort of to its current configuiration if not quality?

    1964 through 1991 are the years of push-feed and are generally considered the worst, although the action was actually stronger than the pre-64 models, and the push-feed seldom gave problems.

    IMHO there are no years that the model 70 is "UNACCEPTABLE" yes quality of fit and finish as well as design changes have varied throughout the years with 1965 -1970's the product of cost cutting and then Winchester sold the name to USRA and closed their doors after that things have never been the same however the rifle has always been SAFE to USE. and today depending on who you believe the quality is faily good. even compared to pre 1964 standards.

    In the final year of production at New Haven, the fit and finish declined. The mating of the stock, and so forth. Some of the best years are the years the Classic was re introduced, with the pre-46 style action.

    Sadly though, concievable, the last year was the worst at New Haven. The Management didn't care about the employees making the product, and the employee's returned the favor, and then some. They are servicable, and can be made from the pigs ear to the silk purse though.

    new production model 70's are made at the FN plant, which IMHO will produce a product of equal or better quality than the pre64 models. FN has a state of the art CNC facility capable of creating tolerances in the .001" range.

    There is absolutely nothing wrong with the push feed models either. Lets face it, the rem700 set the new standard for out of the box accuracy when introduced, and it is a push feed action.

    Then you have these great white hunters talking about controlled feed and cycling a round upside down and blah blah blah. That argument is worthless,..nobody hunts upside down.

    then the next argument is that a push feed can be short stroked and not eject the spent round if a dangerous animal is charging you,..well they fail to mention that as with most controlled feed rifles that use a fixed ejector, the same thing can happen if the bolt isn't brought all the way to the rear when removing the spent case.

    Ohhh and the last year of production did yield some quality issues, some due to employee feelings, and some simply because the equipment was admittedly worn out.
