Polishing a stainless Smith...

I have just won the following auction, and would like to know the most effective way to polish out all the teeny scratches in it.

Please help me out.

Flitz will work, but it'll end up looking like nickel.

Try Scotch Brite Pads and keep finish even.

400 grit on a 10 inch wheel will do it up nice.....

I've had good luck with Flitz and doing it by hand. As stated earlier, it could come out looking like nickle if you work at it.

Another thing is to get jewelers rouge and use a buffing wheel lightly. Be careful here though.

What about using Mothers Polish?

Doug, S&W stainless revolvers have a different finish on different parts of the gun. This varies over time for many models, so, even if I had a M64 to use as a reference, yours might be different. It probably has a bead-blasted matt finish on the top strap, horizontal striations on the sides of the barrel & cylinder, & a smooth finish on the frame & other surfaces.

Between the Scotch Brite pad & several pads of steel wool (0-0000), your challenge will be to duplicate the factory finish on every part. Or, you could just go "high polish" on the entire gun; it's your choice.

You may just want to wait until you get the gun to see how deep the scratches are; it looks to me like the seller has multiple M64's, & the one pictured may not be the one that you actually get.
