Smith Carona 03 A3
Just traded for the best looking 03 I've seen in a long long time. Don't look like it has ever been fired. It came from the Red River Arsenal in 1953 It is one of the guns released through the NRA for it's members (Back when the Gov't liked the NRA) Anyway it came with the original shipping box from the arsenal. I know I have toooooo many questions to ask here so can anyone recomend the best book or place to research this gun?

If it's as you say, it's "cherry". I don't have the '03 book title in front of my memory, but the S/C's were wartime production. The Red River arsenal did a refurb.
Not to worry, a Gov't refurb "zero times" the firearm, that is, returns it to as-new condition.
If you want the history, then by all means get a comprehensive publication, but if you are interested in maintainance/teardown, you can get it right here. Good Luck! Joe0 -
Get the new version of Clark P. Campell's book, THE '03 SPRINGFIELD RIFLES' ERA. Or THE M1903 SPRINGFIELD RIFLE and it's Variations, Revised 2nd. Edition by Joe Poyer.

No offense but I don't believe that 53 is the correct date. More likely 10 years later, when the DCM was selling them off through the NRA. I got mine for $17, shipped to my door via freight.
Their is a lot of stuff on-line on the 03-A3's. Start GOOGLEing and following the links. You will find enough information to keep you occupied for quite awhile.0 -
You are correct, 58 is the date. The print on the shipping label is a bit faded & I could use some new glasses! 0 -
surplusrifle.com has a few good articles on the 03 and 03A3, including a link to the collectors guide book. PS- publisher of that book gives a 25% discount to US military, and 10% discount to CMP members. 0
