Volunteer Shotgun
I recently was given a 410 ga Volunteer Shotgun. It belong to member of the family and I don't know much about it. It's in pretty good condition, all serial numbers match. I was considering having reconditioned but don't want to hurt the value if there is any. Can you offer a suggestion? Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 12GA shotgun that was passed down from at least the late 1800's through a friend of mine and would like to know if there is any way to actually find out when it was made...and who or what is Volunteer company? 0 -
You have what is known as a "Trade Brand Name" shotgun. Those are shotguns made by a major maker for and were sold by a wholesaler or retailer who chose the name to go on he gun. Guns with name Volunteer were made by Crescent Fire Arms of Norwich,CT (1892 to 1932) or Stevens Arms & Tool Company of Chicopee Falls,MA (1915 to 1940) There is also a Volunteer Arms Company name which was made by Crescent or Stevens as well as Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycle Works of Fitchberg.MA (1874 to 1940) All were made for and sold by the Belknap Hardware Company of Louisville,KY a wholesale sporting goods dealer.
You didn't say if the gun is a single barrel or a double barrel or what condition it's in. Restoration costs can exceed the value of the gun. The value of a "Trade Brand Name" shotgun can range from a maximum of $200 for a double barrel in excellent condition and about $175 for a single barrel in the same condition to less than $10 for either in a rusty rotten incomplete piece of junk. I have a large number of these guns in my collection and won't attempt to shoot any of them.0 -
The gun is a single bbl, no rust and the stock and forearm are in good shape. This shotgun belonged to my wifes grandmother and is a keepsake for her. Thanks for the information, I truely appreciate it. 0 -
Thanks accepted, cash preferred. I charge $3.00 for information about an old shotgun ($4.00 for correct information). Please put a $3.00 bill in the small slot on your computer and hit the send key. Don't use a $5.00 bill as my computer is not programed to make change.
Have a nice day.0 -
