Rechambering 7mm Rem Mag for 7mm wby mag

I have Googled this to death and all anyone seems to want to talk about is reaming a 7mm rem mag for 7mm STW (Shooting Times Westerner)I looked at the specs for the Rem mag and the Weatherby mag and the Weatherby is a longer case and cartridge so I was wondering if with a finish reamer turned by hand you could get a clean ream of a 7mm Rem mag chamber?

    Length is not always the only consideration when attempting a re-chamber. Please look at these two dimension drawings and use the dimensions for assessment as opposed to a visual comparison since they are not to scale:

    Note in particular the neck diameters and where the shoulders overlap. This should explain why folks suggest the 7mm STW.

    rigelb79---None of my business, but why would you want to go to the Wby.? Most of my reloading manuals indicate that the Wby (in terms of velocity), only beats the Rem. Mag. by 100 FPS, if that. If you do the rechamber, get ready for higher brass costs. Just a thought. THX HAWKSHAW

    You can also more closely approximately Weatherby ballistics in a Weatherby rifle by changing the barrel on your rifle.

    The barrel length on many Weatherby's is 26" vs 24" for Remington.

    Hmm all good information. Seems like too much work for a mimimum increase in performance. I think I will just stick with the 7mm rem mag for now.

    I know you stated that the changeover seems like too much work, but if you ever do get the hankering for more velocity, you might as Rsnyder55 said get a longer barrel and/or you could rechamber and have the weatherby throat cut in your barrel. What that amounts to is about 1/2" of free bore so that the bullet gets a run at the lands.
    The case can be loaded to what would be higher pressures. Except, the pressures aren't higher because the spike caused when the bullet enters the lands(micro-momentary) isn't there. That's the philosophy anyways. I've been able to load Weatherby cases to, what I consider, astounding velocities.

    So, what I meant above is take your barrel and have it re-chambered (7mm Rem) and have the long throat cut in. Or get a new longer barrel and have that done. At that point if you really want more velocity then go to the Weatherby or even STW.

    I had a Voere 7mm mag rechambered to 7mm STW and it has a 24' barrel with a muzzel break and it shoot great. Alot of people told me 24" was to short for the STW but i have no problems.

    I have a Mark V Deluxe in 7mm Weatherby and like it. I bought it new in 1976 or so, and it has been reliable, more than accurate enough for big game, and has never failed me in any way.

    However, as has been pointed out, you will not gain much in terms of ballistics over the 7mm Remington Magnum, in most cases.

    If you are seeking maximum velocity, you may want to reconsider the STW or Ultra Mag.

    To be honest I have a barrel in 7mm Ultra Mag so I will probably just do thaton a 700 action. I was really just curious cause I always come across a ton of 7mm Rem Mag barrels model 700 takeoff barrels(see my auctions). In fact I have a pretty nice one that has been ported professionally so I wanted to see if there was something else I could do with it. I love my 7mm Rem Mag P14 Enfield and will never want for another 7mm rem mag rifle.As for 7mm STW I have a barrel for a P 14 Enfield in 7mm STW so will probably just have a gunsmith barrel that up for me. I like to experiment with different calibers as all good shooters do.
