Savage 1899 question

I have an older Savage 1899 carbine. My question is this...How do you know what letter prefix it is A,B,C,D F, or H...all it says on top of the receiver that I can make out are the words Savage 1899 Model...

    I have Savage 1899 takedown model in .22 Hi Power with a matched .410 shotgun barrel mfg around 1911. (New info says 1913) I can't find any information about the the shotgun barrel.
    There is also a Stith scope mounted where the tang sight would go and the scope only has 1 ring holding it at the rear and is attached to the barrel at the front

    Can any one offer any insight to this setup especially the shotgun barrel. Mainly could it have been purchased with the gun or was it only available at a later date.

    I'm not totally familiar with the 1899/99 Savage,...but it is a great rifle, and I own an 1899 .250-3000. It should give the letter after the 1899 if it is one of the variations. It won't give it if it doesn't.

    Then again, it might not be marked A,B,C..etc. You just have to look and find out.

    Those variations are not marked on the rifles, and identification depends upon a series of traits that changed over time. The easiest way to sort it out is to buy this book and look it up: Oops! sorry, I just discovered it is out of print and offered for $140. Not the best plan. If you like you cn e-mail me and I will dig it out and we will see if we can figure out what yours is.

    There is a Savage collectors forum at
    www.24hourcampfire.com. Lots of Savage expertise there.
    They will ask you for details about the gun and for pictures.
    But, they will also have answers.

    Plus 1 on the Savage forum at 24 hour campfire. The 1899 Savage was made from the turn of the century until the early 1920's in some interesting chamberings. After the Model 1899 became plain old Model 99, letters were assigned to indicate models. But you have to be careful because certain letters indicate different models depending on when the rifle was manufactured. For instance, an early Model 99 F indicates a break down model and a rifle made in the mid 1950's indicates a lightweight model. Nice classic rifle.
