Nickel stripping

Anyone know how to remove nickel plating without spending a fortune. I know stripper can be found at Brownells but I only have one small handgun I want to strip, can't justify that expense. Any way to home brew something that might work? It's old and about 25% gone already. I want to get it off and parkerize the thing.
Seems I heard once if you leave a nickel gun in Hoppes too long it would remove the nickel. Is that true? Thanks for any advice.

    Hoppes and other solvents will lift nickel plating because the ammonia in the mix attacks the copper strike under the electroplated nickel. Whether it will do a clean and complete job of it suitable for refinishing, I don't know.

    Find someone with a bead blaster. I used one to strip a satin nickle Colt.

    What media did you use, I have a sandblaster.

    Most factory nickeled guns don't have a copper underplating.

    Caswell plating sells a good stripper, or it can be bead blasted or sanded off.

    aluminum oxide 60 grit is what i use when i refinish a gun.
    around $65 for 50lbs.
    the 90 grit is too fine for stripping anything other than blued finish.
    silicone media will work, but it's twice the price and is more aggressive. i wouldn't recommend trying it for the first time on a handgun.[B)]
    an alternative to parkerizing is black matte Ceramacoat finish. you put on 3 coats with 20 min drying time for each coat, then bake it for an hour at 350 degrees. i use the kitchen stove. very durable finish. i think its around $30 for a spray can that will do 3 handguns or one long gun.

    Thanks guys. I'm going to try the al. oxide, what I have may be too fine though. I'll try the Caswell stripper if that doesn't work. It is less expensive than Brownell's.

    Then I suggest chemical stripping. It will get where blasting can't, and you will need to remove ALL the nickel.
