Japanese Arisaka in 284 Win.
I have a 7mm rem mag barrel that is a takeoff from a remington 700 that I would like to turn down and rethread for a Japanese type 99 Arisaka. I was wondering if anyone had ever attempted such a conversion? Was there any feeding problems or alterations needed to be made to the receiver for the new cartridge? I know usually 7mm mag barrels are hard to use as anything else because of the case size but since it will be turned down and rethreaded and a good portion of the chamber taken off due to the design of the arisaka barrel it should be ok. Also the case design of the 284 is based off a belted magnum just shorter with a standard size rim I am thinking it should not pose as big of a problem. Anyone have any thoughts on this one? My first rifle, given to me by my dad back in 1953, was an Arisaka later sent to Flaig's in PA where it was barreled to .257 Roberts, bolt altered for scope use, high polish blue, etc. Still have it, and will till I die, but if I ever decided to sell it I'd be giving it away. Considering the diameter of the .284, I'd be surprised if considerable alteration of the feed rails wasn't required. As strong as the action is, I don't know of any amount or kind of work you could do to it that would ever leave you with a rifle worth what you'd put into it. If you really want to build a custom rifle I'd recommend a good '98 action, 700, 70, or even 77 depending on your preferences. Logic isn't always the deciding factor, though, and if you want a .284 Arisaka, I'm sure it can be done. Just make sure you pay what you have to in order to have the work done right by someone who's been down that road before.0 -
Good info. I do have a 284 featherweight barrel for a Winchester 70 push feed action. If I can get a hold of an action, that may be a better candidate and just save the Arisaka action for a more mainstream project. The cost of the 70 action would probably be what I would spend in gunsmithing services anyway. None of this is a high priority right now. I am in no hurry to get the project finished. 0 -
If the Arisaka is previously untouched, you may be making a $100 gun out of a $300 gun. 0 -
The Arisaka is definately not untouched. It is just an action no stock or barrel with a forged bolt and altered triggerguard. So it is a sporter action I got online for $35. So it is just waiting for a barrel and a stock to turn it into a shooter again. I just had a barrel and an idea and thought I would see how feasible it was. 0 -
I don't have my barrel thread book handy but I don't think you'll have enought 'meat' on a rem. barrel to rethread for the jap action. they only action a rem. barrel can be rethreaded for easly is the turkisk mauser (large ring/small thread .980").
I just checked a jap barrel stub I keep and, after the remington threads are cut off you should still have enought barrel dia. to cut a jap thread (1.002")0 -
For sure it would not be a job an amateur could do but an experienced smith might be able to cut the threads. 0
