What is the Springfield XD "M" factor?

Try as I might, I cannot exactly pin down what the Springfield XD "M" factor is. I know it is changes on the current XD models, compared to the older models, but I can't locate information making a side-by-side comparison of the new and the old. Can someone tell me?

Also, does the "M" factor changes apply to ALL the XD models or just the full size, duty models? I have a new Springfield XD 40 sub-compact enroute for me to Cabela's in KC, from one of their Texas stores, and if they try and sell me the older model, I don't know if I want it.

Any help would be appreciated on this as I believe there are more people than just me out there who are a little confused.

    As I understand it, the "M" gets you a magazine which holds two more shots but is not interchangeable with the original; and a super kewl tackytickle roughening pattern on the grip.

    I believe the "M" is only the standard size, Tactical, Compact, and Subcompact models remain the original pattern and have not been M-ified.

    I have not seen any XD-M subcompacts yet, I have a XDM in 9mm and 40 and in my opinon they are a superior pistol to the regular XD's. The better trigger pull and sights combined with the match grade barrel definitely give you an improvement on your groups on target.

    tr; the XD(M) is not a newer model of the XD. The XD(M) is a seperate model. Springfield still makes the XD also.

    If you ordered a XD that is what you will receive. The XD(M) has better sights, match barrel, better trigger, forward serations on slide, extra grove in the light rail, changeable backstraps for grip, comes with two mags, holster, two mag pouch and mag loader.

    No, the M is currently only available in the 4.5 inch barrel. A little longer than the current service models. The M also has a slimmer profile, more like the M&P than the standard XD. I have both in .40 and prefer the XDm over the XD. However there is a significant price adder for the XDm and it is a personal decision if the extra features are worth the difference.

    I thought the "M" stood for Modular for the interchangeable grip panels.

    Read...they do not make the compact or subcompact in the "M", that I know of. The "M" stands for match, meaning it is an out of the box IPDA ready stock class pistol. Here is a link to SA's site with the XD-M specs.
