Rifle help 30/06
Any ideas on this rifle?
It is bolt action, the barrel is marked Griffin Howe, Inc. NY, 30/06 Government US 30. I am stumped the rifle has no other markings and no serial number that I can find. It has a lot of engraved scrolling on the metal work. It is in very good condition. Any idea on value or history?

Griffin & Howe was a noted gunsmithing firm who did a lot of work for Abercrombie & Fitch before they became a yuppie fashion house. In the 1930s you could outfit an expedition to anywhere in the world at A&F.
This rifle has a Mauser action and a well done custom stock, although not attractive to my tastes. I can't help with a value, it is a luck of the auction type of item and business is not good right now.0 -
Sporterized military rifle, because the clip slot and thumb cutout in the receiver. Generally their not high dollar items. Because Griffin & Howe were so well known, the value of this rifle might be enhanced to a collector. 0 -

It is a Mauser M98 for sure. It is NOT necessarily military because of the thumb slot and stripper clip slot. All COMMERCIAL Mausers had the same features until FN started producing the 'improved' version of the M98 in 1946. This version left out both slots and had a solid left side and rear ring. There are some very valuable Mausers out in the world that command prices in the upper 5 and lower 6 figures that have both slotted features.
I suggest that you take the barreled action out of the stock and look at the bottom of the barrel and the bottom of the action to find proof marks and makers marks. Look close and careful. Photograph those and we can help a little more.

Needless to say it's not a commercial Mauser action. The crude decorations? on the front portion of the receiver were commonly done on reworked military rifles after the original military markings were removed. These are so crude and amateurish I doubt very seriously that Griffin and Howe did the work. Somebody got hold of a Griffin and Howe barrel and used it to make a sporter in their garage.
Sorry to say the rifle isn't going to be easy to sell, because of the above.0 -
It is what is says on the barrel, your rifle was barreled by Griffin & Howe. They did nothing else on this rifle, the rest of the rifle is strictly armature work. The Lyman 35 rear sight would account for about 50% of the value of the rifle. 0
